Privacy policy

The app

The ShotPlots app runs in your browser. It has no server that holds your work. Your plans, the objects in them and the files you save are never transmitted to us or to anyone else.

The app stores a temporary recovery draft in your own browser's local storage so that a crashed tab does not lose your work. That data never leaves your device, and clearing your browser data removes it.

If you enter a licence code, it is sent once to our checkout provider, Gumroad, to check that it is valid. The result is remembered in your browser, so the check is not repeated. Only the code is sent, nothing from your plans goes with it, and, as with any web request, Gumroad can see your IP address.

When a code is accepted, Gumroad's reply includes the email address the licence was bought with. The app keeps that address in your browser, next to the licence, and shows it in Settings as "Licensed to". It is not sent anywhere, it never appears on exported PDFs or images, and anyone using the same browser can see it in Settings. Clearing your browser data removes it.

The app can be installed on your device. An open or installed copy checks shotplots.com, the same address it was loaded from, for a newer version of itself and downloads it if there is one. No plan data is sent. Apart from the licence check and this update check, the app contacts no other address.

This website

The pages you are reading are static files. Apart from the analytics described below, they load nothing from third-party servers: no ad networks, no social widgets, no embedded video. The heading font is served from this site.

Our host records standard web server logs (IP address, page requested, time, browser user agent) as part of serving the site. These are used only to keep the site up and to spot abuse.

When you send a message through the contact form, a scrambled, one-way form of your IP address is kept for up to an hour, only so that nobody can flood the form with messages. It is never sent anywhere and is not used for anything else.

Analytics

We use Google Analytics to count visits to these pages. It records which pages are read, the visitor's country, device and browser, which site or search sent them, and clicks on the main buttons (opening the app, buying a licence, opening the sample PDF). We use this only to learn which pages are useful.

It is not used for advertising. Google's advertising features are switched off, and detailed records are deleted after two months. Your IP address reaches Google as part of the request, as with any web request, but Google Analytics does not store it.

Google Analytics sets cookies in your browser (named _ga and _ga_9KJVSN43JF) so it can tell one visit from the next. They last up to 13 months unless you clear them. Google handles this data under its own terms, and it may be processed outside Australia, including in the United States.

The app is never tracked. Analytics runs on these pages only. Nothing in the app at shotplots.com/app/ loads it, and nothing about your plans or your licence is ever sent to Google or anyone else.

Your choice

If you are in the European Union, the UK, Switzerland or a nearby European country, analytics stays off until you accept it, and nothing is sent to Google before then. We work this out from your device's time zone, not by looking up your location. Everywhere else it is on by default.

Anyone, anywhere, can turn it off at any time with the Analytics settings link at the bottom of every page. If your browser sends a "do not track me" privacy signal (Global Privacy Control), analytics stays off and you are not asked.

Your choice, and your paper or blueprint view, are remembered in your browser's local storage, not in a cookie.

Buying a licence

Payments are handled entirely by our checkout provider, Gumroad. When you buy, you give them your email address and payment details; we never see or store your card details. They send you a licence code by email, and they hold the record of the sale under their own privacy policy, which you should read if that matters to you.

We keep your email address only where needed to send your licence code again if you lose it, and to handle a refund.

Your rights

Because we hold almost nothing about you, there is almost nothing to request or delete. If you have bought a licence and want your email address removed from our records, write via the contact form and it will be done.

Analytics data is held by Google in a form that does not name you, and we cannot pick out one person's visits from it. To stop it being collected, use Analytics settings or clear this site's cookies.

Children

This is a professional tool with no social features and no user accounts. It is not directed at children.

Changes

If this policy changes, the date at the top changes with it. Material changes will be noted on this page rather than made quietly.
